International Cargo Surveying D. K. ‘Bud’ Prestwood has been involved in maritime cargo shipping since 1954. He is a Senior Retired member of the International Longshoremen’s Association Local 1351 in the Port of Houston. This Local Union is comprised of Cargo Clerks, Checkers, Timekeepers and Cargo Inspectors. During his 35 years of involvement with the coordination of the loading and discharging of cargo, he has overseen the loading of cargo aboard ships, managing proper and safe stowage according to the vessel’s port rotation during its voyage. Prestwood has documented the condition of the cargo during each step of its handling from first arrival at
the dock, during discharge from trucks or railcars, placement into the dockside warehouse, movement out of the warehouse to shipside and final placement aboard the ship. During each phase, photos of any damage were taken to establish when and by whom the damage was caused. At the end of the operation, a complete report was created for the foreign buyer. This same care was taken when inbound cargo was discharged from the ship until it was finally loaded aboard the U.S. Importer’s truck or railcar.
