Beam Balancing Instructions.

There is a definite advantage to increasing the length of the beam in that the greater the distance from the fulcrum to the pitman arm, the less amount of weights are required to achieve a balanced work load on the up stroke and the down stroke, (Diagram 7 or 8).

To achieve the greatest electrical efficiency possible, the beam must be balanced. In addition, a balanced beam will reduce wear and tear on the pump jack and motor.

A beam is considered balanced when the amps required on the down stroke are as close as possible to the amps used on the up stroke. This is accomplished by placing the weight pin near the end of the beam and adding or removing weights until this is accomplished. For finer adjustment, the weight pin may be moved back and forth, (see Balancing Formula).

If you want to minimize the amount of weight used to balance the work load, you simply extend the beam (see Diagram 8) to it's greatest distance from the fulcrum which will reduce the size of your stroke, but then you increase the size of your crank arm to maintain desired stroke.

The beam is balanced only after the sizes of the stroke, beam and crank arm have been determined.

The mathematical formula (see Sizing Formula) helps you determine either the size of the crank arm, the distance from the fulcrum to the end of either side of the beam or the desired length of stroke.

Ajusta Pump has an additional feature on the beam (see Diagram 9) that  is ideal for remote areas where the cost of obtaining weights is a problem.

The Ajusta Pump has a third beam, called the balance beam, concealed within the main beam that can extend beyond the pitman arm which will allow for a further reduction in the amount of weights required.

The balance beam comes with fitted weights, a weight pin to use with conventional weights, or a weight plate that you can attach any other form of weight available in a local area.
